Enable the Icon Map workload

Icon Map for Fabric is a Fabric workload published by Tekantis. Before anyone can create an Icon Map, a Fabric administrator allows partner workloads in the tenant and someone with capacity rights adds Icon Map from the Workload hub.

The whole process, from enabling the workload to the first map, in a few minutes:

1. Send us your tenant ID (private preview)

During the private preview Icon Map is not listed publicly. It is published to a preview audience of named tenants, so the first step is to give your onboarding contact your Entra tenant ID (a GUID: Microsoft Entra admin center, Overview, or in Fabric under Help, About). Once it has been added, allow up to 10 minutes for the workload to appear in your Workload hub.

2. Allow partner workloads (Fabric admin)

In the Fabric Admin portal, Tenant settings, under Additional workloads, enable:

  • Users can see and work with additional workloads not validated by Microsoft - required while Icon Map is in preview. Without it the workload does not appear in the hub at all, whatever else is configured. Can be scoped to a security group.
  • Capacity admins and contributors can add and remove additional workloads - lets capacity administrators add Icon Map to a capacity, which is the usual way to enable it.
  • Optional: Workspace admins can add and remove additional workloads - if you would rather enable Icon Map for individual workspaces.

Leave Workspace admins can develop partner workloads off; it is for building workloads, not using them. Tenant-setting changes can take a few minutes to take effect; sign out and back in if the hub does not update.

3. Add Icon Map from the Workload hub

  1. In Fabric, open Workloads in the left navigation (the Workload hub).
  2. Under More workloads, find Icon Map (preview) and open it. This is Icon Map's product page: item types, documentation, support links.
  3. Choose Add workload and select the capacity (or capacities) it should be available on. Only workspaces assigned to a selected capacity can create Icon Map items. Tenant-wide and per-workspace options are offered where the tenant settings allow them.
  4. If you are an Entra administrator, a consent prompt for Tekantis.IconMap-Backend appears now. Tick Consent on behalf of your organization and accept - see Grant admin consent for what it contains.

Icon Map moves from More workloads to My workloads, and users see the new item types when they choose New item in a workspace on that capacity:

  • Icon Map - the map authoring and viewing item.
  • Icon Map Organizational Catalog - curate internal geospatial layers.
  • Tileset Builder - generate vector tilesets from OneLake files.
  • Floor Plan Importer - convert CAD floor plans to indoor maps.

Capacity

Icon Map items run on a Fabric capacity, and reading data from OneLake requires a capacity-backed workspace. Make sure the workspaces where people will build maps are assigned to a capacity that Icon Map has been added to.

If it does not appear

  • Confirm your tenant ID was added to the preview audience and 10 minutes have passed.
  • Confirm Users can see and work with additional workloads not validated by Microsoft is enabled, and that your account is in its security group if it is scoped.
  • Check the tenant setting has not been overridden at the capacity level (Admin portal, Capacity settings, the capacity, delegated tenant settings).
  • Look under My workloads as well as More workloads; once added it moves.
  • Sign out, close the browser and sign back in; the hub caches its catalogue for the session.
