Licensing FAQ

Answers to the questions we are asked most often about trying, buying and assigning Icon Map Lite licenses.

Trying and buying

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Icon Map Lite has a free one-month trial on Microsoft AppSource. The license page in the visual has a Start your free 1-month trial button that opens the same listing.

Where can I buy Icon Map Lite?

On Microsoft AppSource. Icon Map Lite is licensed per user, and AppSource is the only place to buy it.

How much does it cost?

For prices, licenses for a team or organization, and purchase orders, contact sales@tekantis.com.

Do I need a license key?

No. Icon Map Lite has no license keys. Power BI tells the visual whether the person viewing the report has a license.

Does a Lite license cover Icon Map Pro or Icon Map Slicer?

No. The three visuals are licensed separately. An Icon Map Lite license does not cover Icon Map Pro or Icon Map Slicer, and their licenses do not cover Icon Map Lite. See Lite, Pro and Slicer.

Who needs a license

Who needs a license?

Everyone who views a report that contains Icon Map Lite, including the people who build it. A license is per person, so one license covers every report that person opens.

What does someone without a license see?

A sheet headed "Get Icon Map Lite to see this map" that covers the map, with buttons to start the free trial or buy a license on AppSource. The map controls, scale bar and attribution stay visible around it. See How Icon Map Lite is licensed.

Assigning licenses

How do I assign licenses?

In the Microsoft 365 admin center. Select the Icon Map Lite subscription, select Assign licenses, enter the email addresses or group names, and select Assign. You may need an administrator to do this.

Once a license is assigned, the person may need to restart Power BI Desktop, or sign out of and back in to the Power BI service.

I bought a license, but I still see the license page

A license takes a moment to reach Power BI. Close and reopen the report: in the Power BI service press F5, and in Power BI Desktop close and reopen it. If the page is still showing, check with whoever manages your licenses that one is assigned to you.

Assigned licenses show as "Not Available" in the admin center

A Microsoft issue prevents some users from being assigned licenses bought on AppSource. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, open Your Products. You may need Change Billing Account to select the billing account the licenses were bought from. If Assigned Licenses shows "Not Available", contact support@icon-map.com. You may also need to raise a Microsoft support ticket.

How do I cancel my license?

Cancel the subscription in the products section of the Microsoft 365 admin center, with the Cancel subscription button.

Where licensing works

Can I use Icon Map Lite in Power BI Embedded, Publish to web or Power BI Report Server?

No. Icon Map Lite works in Power BI Desktop and the Power BI service only. Per user licensing needs Power BI to tell the visual which licenses the viewer holds, and those environments cannot. In them, the visual shows a page headed "Icon Map Lite does not support this environment".

Icon Map Pro and Icon Map Slicer are licensed differently and work in all of these environments. To talk through the options, contact sales@tekantis.com.

What about GCC, DoD and other government or sovereign clouds?

Icon Map Lite does not support them. Use Icon Map Pro or Icon Map Slicer, or contact sales@tekantis.com.

I'm building a report for a customer

Licenses are assigned in the tenant where people view the report. The customer's viewers need licenses in the customer's tenant. If you build the report in a different tenant, you need a license there too.
